Rachel Barton

I have been performing for as long as I can remember and joined SSPA in 2003. My strong passion for dance developed as I realised my ambition to perform onstage and express myself through a range of genres including freestyle, lyrical, street, contemporary and commercial styles.

In order to become a versatile performer I developed my acting and singing skills and followed the IDTA Musical Theatre Syllabus at StarStruck which was lots of fun and very rewarding.

At the age of 10 I auditioned for my first major role at SSPA as Aladdin and was successful. This achievement fuelled my confidence and self-belief and Katie awarded me the prestigious ‘Star of the Year’ award! Since then I have performed in various roles at SSPA including ‘Dorothy’ in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘Mrs Bucket’ in ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.

Katie and all the teachers have always inspired me to be the best performer I can be, challenging me as a performer and providing numerous opportunities to showcase my skills in a variety of performance venues including Her Majesty’s Theatre, the NEC and the Birmingham Symphony Hall.

In 2012 I was awarded a place at the Birmingham Ormiston Academy (BOA) to study the BTEC Extended Diploma in Musical Theatre and in 2013 I was awarded the ‘Triple Threat Trophy’ by Katie, an emotional end to my journey as a student at SSPA.

After completing my course at BOA with the highest grades attainable (Triple Distinction Star) I was successful in my audition for a place at LIPA (Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts) and whilst studying here for my degree in dance, I also qualified as a professional dance teacher with the IDTA. I now come back to teach at StarStruck and at their PAP’s when I can.

Since graduating in 2017 I have received my first professional job as ‘Snow White’ in Disneyland Paris, a dream come true!

I would like to thank all of the teachers for everything they have done for me over the past 11 years. Without their fabulous training and continued support I wouldn’t be where I am today. I have made so many friends over the years and have amazing memories which will stay with me forever.

Good luck to everyone at SSPA; follow your dreams and never give up!
